LIFE$KILLS is a one-day workshop geared towards high school students. This program engages students in a hands-on learning environment at our Young AmeriTowne of Kansas site in Lenora, KS, and helps prepare them to be financially-fit for the future.
BUDGETING
Students take a short survey at school asking about their career interests and work ethic, and are then assigned a "role." This "role" gives students an address to use, dependents, annual and monthly salary, and more. The students use this information to fill out their monthly budget sheet. Each monthly budget sheet includes daycare, groceries, student loans, and utilities. Then, they might spin the "Life Happen$" wheel and spend more to replace a tire or cover an unexpected medical bill.
COMMUNITY READINESS
What does it take to be a part of their local communities? What can I do now and in the future for my community? Students participate in our "Build Up Your Community" presentation with activities and more to give them an idea of what they can do in their local communities.
PAYING WITH PLASTIC
Paying with plastic is definitely the norm nowadays. We play a short game with the students about the different types of cards - debit, credit, gift, and ATM cards. Our goal is to help the students start the conversation and get an idea of how each one is different, and the importance of making wise decisions with debit and credit cards.
ADULTING
Using real-world scenarios and data helps this program be as realistic as possible for the students. Making decisions and adjusting their life as needed helps students open their eyes to the adult world.
